The fact of the matter is that there are only natural treatments for colic. There really are no proven medical treatments for the baby with colic. This is due, at least in part, to the fact that experts really don’t know what causes colic, and that different babies may have different reasons for colic. Natural treatment for colic is, by its very nature, a process of trial and error.
One natural treatment for colic is the use of gripe water. Gripe water contains a variety of nutritional supplements that are thought to help your baby’s gastrointestinal tract. While not all babies have colic because of a problem with their gastrointestinal tract, gripe water may help those that do. Gripe water typically contains some proven ingredients, such as ginger, sodium bicarbonate and fennel, that are known to soothe stomach problems.
There are also some homeopathic remedies that are natural treatments for colic. Chamomile, also called chamomilla, is a homeopathic remedy that is thought to help your baby relax, as well as provide some pain relief. Wild Yam, or Dioscorea, also may help treat colic, as it can prevent spasms in the baby’s gastrointestinal tract. Bitter apple, also known as Colycynthis, is used to prevent or relieve intestinal cramping. While these treatments haven’t been proven medically to provide a relief for colic, some parents have experienced success using some or all of them.
the good news about colic is that it is temporary. It will, eventually, pass. Colic is not known to cause any sort of harm to your baby. With any luck, you may be able to find that some of these natural treatments for colic may provide both your baby and you some relief until the colic passes on its own. If your baby has severe or prolonged crying, it is certainly appropriate for you to speak with your health care provider, who may be able to help identify other potential treatments.
