What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

Shaken baby syndrome is a severe form of head injury that occurs when a baby is shaken forcibly enough to cause the baby’s brain to rebound (bounce) against his or her skull. This rebounding may cause bruising, swelling, and bleeding of the brain, which may lead to permanent, severe brain damage or death.

The condition is usually the result of non-accidental trauma or child abuse. Of those responsible, approximately 37 percent are the baby’s father, 20 percent are the mother’s boyfriend, 17 percent are a female caregiver other than the mother, and 12 percent are the mother. Any adult is capable of injuring a baby.

Normal Sleep Pattern in Infants

Parents of newborns seem to worry about everything. However, the issue of sleep seems to come up over and over again. Parents are always wondering if their baby is normal and if they are sleeping the right amount, waking up too much, or if they have their schedules reversed. The good news is that most babies get enough sleep, the bad news for parents is that it is completely normal for baby to wake up some at night because they need a diaper change or because they are hungry. As they grow and their tummies grow they will be able to go longer stretches of time without waking. However, if an infant sleeps for 5 hours straight that is considered “Sleeping through the night” so don’t let that phrasing confuse you! Many parents get confused by this term because they assume it means sleeping for at least 8 hours straight if not more. That’s not the case at this age, however, and most babies and even toddlers will continue to wake at night for a while.

However, sleep concerns often plague new parents who wonder what a normal infant sleep schedule is and how to get their infant to sleep more so the entire family is well rested. The idea of a “normal” sleep schedule for young infants is actually quite wide and parents should understand that no two infants are the same.

Infant Sleep Schedule is Backwards

Does your baby have his days and nights mixed up? If so, this is quite common in infants who are content to sleep anytime they want despite their parents’ need for sleep during the night. When babies are brand new they have no concept of time or a schedule and will sleep when they are tired and wake up when they are hungry. It’s difficult in the first few weeks when baby sleeps more during the day than at night, but in time this works out and baby will get on a schedule.

Infant Sleep and Excessive Sweating

New parents worry about every little thing that happens to their infant. One cause for concern is excessive sweating. Most new parents don’t expect their infant to sweat at all, much less profusely. However, it’s not uncommon for babies to sweat when they are in their deepest sleep. Shockingly, infants are more likely to sweat profusely during their deepest stage of sleep than adults or older kids.
