Is it Normal for Infants to Snort and Snore?

Most parents expect their infant to sleep soundly without making any noises. Then, a snorting and snoring infant surprises them and they wonder if this is normal or if there is something wrong with their baby. In general, infants will make all kinds of sounds while breathing during the first few months of life. This may include whistling, snoring, snuffling, irregular breaths, pauses, and more, but these are generally normal. Of course, there are some warning signs you should look out for and never worry about calling your pediatrician or visiting the emergency room if you are worried.

Are Breathing Pauses Normal in an Infant?

Many new parents check their baby’s breathing on a very regular basis. It’s common to hear parents say that they just want to make sure their little one is still breathing during the middle of the night, or the day even. Parents worry about SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and are overly aware of their baby’s breathing especially if any pauses occur. This can be quite scary, too, because parents expect normal, rhythmic breathing and if there is a pause, no matter how short, it can be terrifying.

How Much Should a 6-12 Month Infant Sleep?

Most parents have gotten into a good pattern by the time their baby is 6-12 months old. However, baby sleep patterns change a lot and generally in the 6-12 month range baby will sleep the most at night and then need a morning and afternoon nap.

How Much Should a 3-6 Month Infant Sleep?

Every parent wants to know how much their baby should be sleeping. Usually this is because the parents aren’t getting enough sleep and need to know that what they are going through is normal. Babies between 3 and 6 months of age have varying sleep schedules. Some babies may sleep 12 hours straight with a couple short naps during the day. Other babies may sleep one long 6 hour stretch and then a couple more 3-5 hour stretches during the day and afternoon. Other babies may sleep and wake at regular intervals to eat more, especially breastfed babies. Most babies in the 3-6 month range have learned to sleep longer stretches at night, however.
